Shapingba District, located in the west of the main urban area of Chongqing, borders the Jialing River to the east and Jinyun Mountain to the west. It covers an area of 396 sqkm and has a permanent population of about 1.5 million. Shapingba District is a strategic gateway to the west, and part of the Chengdu Chongqing Economic Circle. The first-launched China Europe freight train (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe) departs from Shapingba, and it is the source of the New Western Land-sea Corridor.

In the first three quarters of 2023, there were nearly a thousand new technology-based companies in Shapingba District, ranking third in the main urban area of Chongqing. The revenue growth rate of retail, accommodation, and other designated service industries all rank first in the main urban area of Chongqing. The total import and export volume of foreign trade remains the highest, and the investment growth rate and total retail sales are both higher than Chongqing's average level.

Shapingba District has a range of innovative resources, open platforms, and strong industrial heritage, whilst also being a hub for leading hospitals and schools. It is a unique national and international gateway, and has a healthy ecological environment. This makes it one of the region’s most liveable areas and a key site for development and construction.

Global Gateway and Dialogue

Shapingba, is a global logistics channel, with 11 railways and six expressways, and five 5 light rail lines, as well as multi-modal transportation incorporating rail, air, water, and public transportation that connects the most developed economic sector in western China. Not only is it the starting point of the China Europe freight train, but it has also become the source of the New Western Land-sea Corridor. It has access to nearly 40 countries and over 100 cities via land, and 480 ports in 120 countries and regions around the world by sea. Connected by both land and sea, the import and export volume of foreign trade accounts for more than 40% of Chongqing's total.

Three thousand years of Shaci culture

Shapingba District has seen remarkable growth in the cultural and tourism industry, including leisure and entertainment, digital cultural and creative industries, and the integration of agriculture, culture, and tourism. In 2023, two new municipal level cultural industry demonstration parks were launched, two new municipal level performing arts spaces were created, and the Ciqikou Historical and Cultural Block Protection and Utilization Project were included in the Yangtze River National Cultural Park (Chongqing Section) and the "Specialized, Refined, Unique, and New" national key project library for cultural inheritance and development. It is home to a National Civilized Tourism Demonstration Unit, and three companies were awarded the annual Chongqing Enterprise Innovation Award. Chongqing 1949 was selected as a creative model case for tourism products by the "China Service" tourism association and a "National Immersive Cultural and Tourism New Industry Demonstration Case" by the Industry Development Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
