Consumer Spending Across Chongqing Up 7.0% - May Day Consumption Boom Sweeps Chongqing

During the 2026 May Day holiday, Chongqing launched its Golden Consumption Week campaign under the theme "Shop in China · Love Chongqing". More than 700 promotional events were organised across the municipality, supported by preferential policies and consumer incentives worth over RMB 1 billion. New consumption scenarios, innovative retail formats and upgraded consumer experiences helped sustain strong market momentum. Domestic tourist arrivals increased by 8.4% year on year, tourism spending rose by 8.6%, and total consumer spending during the holiday period grew by 7%.

Retail sales across Chongqing increased by 6.0% during the holiday period. Supported by national and municipal subsidy programmes, categories such as home appliances and consumer electronics generated 129,000 transactions worth RMB 430 million, with a leverage ratio of 1:7.4. Average daily footfall across the municipality's 20 key commercial districts increased by 5.6%, while sales revenue across the 20 major commercial districts in the central urban area rose by 6.4%.

Service-sector sales grew by 8.1%, including a 6.7% increase in catering revenue. Night-time consumption remained a major driver of spending, rising by 7.9% year on year and accounting for 50.3% of total holiday-period consumption.
